stabilizers/hydrofoils...Gimmick or Worthy?

I have a 2004 Ebbtide Campione 210 deckboat used for basic family recreation. I am new to boating, and saw some stabilizer/hydrofoils in the boat shop today that boast about quicker planing and better economy. There about $50, so if there's any truth to it I'm ready to buy one. But I'm not excited about drilling holes in my outdrive and wasting coin if it's just a gimmick.
The boat has a Volvo Penta 5.0 Gxi/SX 270 hp. What do you think? Spend the money or laugh at those that do? And are there any concerns about drilling holes in the outdrive, or preferred ways to do it?
Thanks for all your thoughts!

Hi we tried the Hydrofoil (Permatrim) and it made a small difference.
I have just put a set of SX Smart Tabs on my Bowrider and the difference it made was incredible, it's like a new boat plains much quicker and is allot more stable.
From my point of view it was worth every penny and some.

Trim tabs of some sort are a much better choice,A 4 blade prop will also improver hole shot, ability to stay on plane, handling at the dock.It may reduce top end a little
as will too agressive use of the tabs.

I have a set of the SS smart tabs and love them. They work great and keep the boat stable.
