Basically Im going to be mounting my sidepods (which have no bolts and are screwed into the threads in the block) And my water jacket cover which is a nut and bolt combo.

I am thinking of dipping each bolt in a high temp corrosion/rust resistant grease before screwing them in so in 5-10 years if need be i can unscrew them (i use my boat in salt water 100%)

Do you think this is a good idea or is there something better?

I also have this Gasket Maker RTV thing and i have scratched all my covers/pods where the gasket plus the block a bit because of prying and taking the old gasket off. Im thinking of putting the RTV which is resistant to 300deg and has corrosion resistant qualities plug a brand new gasket.. Will this help?

Thanks guys BTW my motor is a Mercury 650cc Thunderbolt 1970.. 4 cyl and 65hp

Wouldn't an "ANTI-SEIZE" compound be a better treatment for the bolt threads?

any preferred brands of the anti seize stuff?

So dipping in grease is a no go? I thought it would be ok because its soft and it would fill the threads and when time comes in 10 years i would be able to remove it because no rust has formed :)

use antiseize the grease will harden over time and make the bolts hard to remove

Re: Stainless Steel Bolts/Nuts For mounting waterjacket/sidepods plus gaskets

hello
dont use the copper anti-sieze either. it should be nickel/tin.
it will be a dull grey. I usually use omc triple guard grease or merc special lube 101. neither will ever dry out.
they will be just as nasty 2 years later as the day you installed it.
the only use for RTV is as a tub and sink sealant in the house. toss it away on your boat.
do not ever use it where it will come into contact with fuel mix. either in the exhaust or intake side. OMC gel seal or loc-tite gasket maker will seal up to .01". I have seen cases were silicone sealant actually increased the corroision at the aluminium joints. not sure why but I have seen it and it never seals to the aluminium very long.for transfer port and exhaust cover gaskets use omc adhesive M
best stuff in the box. or on intake side use omc gasket sealer, a brown paint on sealant.
good luck and keep posting

Rodbolt - about the RTV: You know that eye watering vinegar smell you get from silicone RTV? It's acedic acid, a by-product of the vulcanization, and it eats aluminum good. There's such a thing as 'Electronics grade RTV' that doesn't produce acetic acid (and doesn't have the smell). Not that that has anything to do with outboards...

Is it just me or did y2j say he was going to use stainless steel bolts??? These will never rust remember. If you are putting a nyloc on the other end of the bolt it is advisable to use a special lubricant as without the nut can jamb half way down with no way of getting it on or off. Go to a specialist bolt shop (Searle Fasteners in Perth) and they'll set you right.
Andrew

Re: Stainless Steel Bolts/Nuts For mounting waterjacket/sidepods plus gaskets

Basically the big plates on the side which are 2 part. The first divides and covers the exaust ports the second has circulation of water with a hose leading out of it which is your tell tale :) Thats the side pod.

I have this BLUE RTV and it says it has corrosion resistant qualities. Basically it also says you can use it on exuast etc. but i just wanted to use it in a tiny line all around on both sides of the gasket just to fill in the marks i left from the chisel from removing the old gaskets. So i want to use a gasket and the rtv? The guy at the automotive shop recommended this is the best solution for me :/

It only produces Acetic Acid upon curing. When cured it has no residue and I've used it on car waterpumps, Valve covers and all sorts of aluminium fittings with NO PROBS....
If there will be water present, any acid discharged will be diluted.
GO FOR IT....

Re: Stainless Steel Bolts/Nuts For mounting waterjacket/sidepods plus gaskets

couldn't find any anti seize.. my patience ran away :(

So i just used a lithium based hi temp grease which is water resistant for marine purposes.. I just lightly brushed each of the bolts with it before screwing them in

Anyway i screwed them in and set my torque wrench to 20 or so pounds .. even though it tells me in the book to do it to 70

Anyway turned each bolt hand tight as it says in the manual in the order it also says.

Then i started with the torque wrench starting at 20 pounds and to my amazment the heads on the bolts started turning the thread wasn't :(

Turns out because i added a gasket sealer which is silicone based and the gasket it didn't want to go that hard. I did manage to remove the broken bolts then i put new ones which i tightened as much i could before the heads started turning..

I think its sealed for 2 generations to come with the gasket and sealer

Ill show some pics in a minute or 2.. just gotta post em

Firstly i gooped all aorund the screwholes and everywhere on the block

Them I put the gasket on top of the block and did the exact same on top of the gasket

The finished product after some cleaning

so basically the sandwich is

Block > Sealant BLUE RTV LOCTITE GASKET MAKER > Real Gasket from Mercury > Blue RTV Again > Cover

:)

Re: Stainless Steel Bolts/Nuts For mounting waterjacket/sidepods plus gaskets

Hello
now I know what it is. I think the tech book refers to them as exhaust and transfer port covers. all that blue goo pooching out is also pooching in were it will break off and find a home in a tiny cooling passage. I wish the auto guys would stick to mucking up autos. I wish I had a dollar for every drive that came in the the old blue goo corrosion. it would have been much better to use OMC adhisive M. also I think you may have mistaken inch pounds for foot pounds. I know all the blue goo mechanics that think if a little goo is good a lot is better are going to jump me but the best thing to do with silly cone is to throw it in the trash and use a sealer designed as a marine sealant.
but good luck and keep posting
