Ok guys, I had a very odd occurance this weekend. I was running my 1973 18 HP Fastwin Evinrude at WOT down the river when all of a sudden I hear a loud bang from my engine, the motor flies up out of the water, reaches up as high as the tilt will allow it to go, then flops back down into running position. When I was able to get to a safe place out of the direct path of a barge bearing down on me about 1/2 mile away with my backup trolling motor, I inspected the motor for any damages and found that the STAINLESS STEEL drive pin had been sheared at the prop. The prop is in as good of condition as any 39 year old prop should be and did not show any signs of striking anything. I was in 13+ foot deep water when the shear pin let loose. Has anyone ever heard of a drive pin shearing off without striking anything or is it possible that there was a massive critter or log that just so happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time? I am highly puzzled as to why this happened. I did have a few brass shear pins in my "oh sh*t kit" with me and was able to get one in before the barge passed and was able to run the 18 back home. I have looked for new SS drive pins to no luck. Does anyone know where they sell em?
