I run my boat with a 115hp Mercury in the Fall and Winter months. Encountering debris and maybe a rock or two that didn't use to be there last trip out, I switched to a stainless prop from aluminum. Was told that stainless would hold up better and last longer. Now I find out that I am in danger of loosing my lower unit, because they don't make a hub adapter that will self destruct before the gear box.
The aluminum props have a plastic hub insert that with give out (a long with the blades ) that may save the lower unit on severe impack.
Are my assumptions correct?
Does anyone know of a company that makes a stainless steel prop or hub adapter that will take the impack before destorying the lower unit.
It seem to me that replacing a hub assembly would be cheaper and faster then replacing the lower unit. A person could even replace it while out on the river or lake. Just need to carry a spare.
Here's your change to give it to me if I am just being paranoid.

It's odd to see a ss prop with a solid hub. What brand prop do you have? Outside of some special race props, the ss ones do have rubber hubs.

Re: Stainless Steel Mystery

It is a TURNING POINT EXPRESS stainless steel propeller. The part number is EX1319SM. It did come with a master guard hub system, which has a rubber bushing to protect the drive and engine.(so the manuel saids)
I guess my question was, is this rubber bushing adequate to protect the gears and lower unit? This seems like a well built hub system.
I am leaving on a fishing trip Monday, but as soon as I get back next week, I am going to check into the Mercury Flo-Torq hub system.
Anyway my wife is saying I am just being paranoid, but I do know that the question and answer people on IBOATS can help steer me in the right direction.
