back in '04 when we bought our boat with its 90 hp Johnson Sea Pro outboard it came with a black prop and I remember asking asking about going to one made out of stainless steel .... I distinctly remember being told that the black prop was made of stainless that had been coated with Teflon .... I was told that it was known as a SST Prop .... Stainless Steel Teflon .... until recently I never had an reason to question what I was told but our son is using the boat, doesn't seem to believe that story, and wants to install a stainless prop .... I guess it all boils down to if the SST prop on our boat is stainless coated with Teflon and if so, is there any advantage to replacing it with another stainless prop

That sounds a bit silly to coat stainless with Teflon, but who knows. My question would be why you want to go to stainless steel in the first place?

most black stainless props are teflon coated. its cheaper to coat the castings than it is to polish them to make them smooth.

one of the benefits of PTFE coating is the reduced biological growth. the other is if the coating is intact, you know that the prop hasnt been run in sand

its my understanding that in most instances a stainless prop is superior to an aluminum prop

Stainless Steel Tough .... thanks for the link, information appreciated .... I'm glad to know I wasn't dreaming about the discussion in which I was told the black coating was Teflon .... the coating on our prop isn't perfect but considering its age is in pretty good shape .... so long as it continues to perform, I don't see any reason to replace it

Re: Stainless Steel Teflon (SST)

Back in 1972 I bought a new Johnny 125 with a stock alum prop. Seems every other week the prop was in the shop with a bent blade....least little thing I hit did it. A short time after I bought it OMC came out with their SST, stainless steel with teflon coating and a bronze deflector ring. Cost was $185...The stainless was covered but the ring was not. The only reason I can think of that made them coat it with Teflon was to reduce corrosion. One would be rust from the iron in the steel....even though it was ss and had a high Nickel content. The other was to cover the ss to prevent it from contacting the water which is an electrolysis reduction measure.....don't eat up your Zinc sacrificial elements so fast as an unprotected ss prop can do.

It is stainless, I assure you.
