Hello Boating Enthusiasts!

I have a 90hp Yamaha engine that runs perfect in all circumstances except when idling in gear in water. Of course she functions like a champ on muffs and once she's in gear in water with the throttle up everything is fine at any other speed, but when I put her in gear while idling to putt around she instantly dies. From poking through other forums it looks like something to do with the backpressure created in water obviously, however, the suggestions are from carbs, to fuel mixture, to something that alerts if your gears are grinding and shuts the engine off along with 10 other explanations. If anyone has had this issue or can give me a list in order of DIY ease to check out I'd appreciate it. Another small issue is that this motor is a 90AETO 6H1 and while I was able to find the service manual tons of searching has led me to no avail on the years this motor was made and/or which repair manual to buy. The typical Yamaha serial number decoder people use is no good. Perhaps the engine wasn't a model sold in the US? Here is a picture of the engine if it is any help, I'd love to know the year to make sure I'm buying the correct parts as I move forward with this.

Thanks again friends,
Sportfish

Mine is a 1999 C90 Yamaha that I bought new......what is your idle RPM?....should be around 750 RPM's...maybe yours is a bit low? When my motor stalled a couple of years ago I removed each idle mixture screw from top of carbs taking note of settings of each(turns out from lightly seated) with jet out I sprayed carb cleaner into the hole followed by a jet of air, replaced/reset screws....no more stalling since. Maybe some trash in that jet/circuit, I guess?....hope it helps!
