I have a 1990 Force 150HP that stalls at idle. I've read some previos posts about the exhaust boot leaking and have seen the idle exhaust boot that was mentioned in one of these posts. Are there any other seals or boots that could also be at fault Thanks Bill Mc

Is the air/fuel mixture properly adjusted on your carbs? It is usually one turn out from the seated position of the screw.

If motor idles fine with the cowling off you may be in the right direction. If it wont idle with the cowling off you may have a fuel related problem.

Re: Stalling at idle

The big question is...does it only stall at idle? If it runs great at WOT and when moving along, but runs poorly when sitting at idle..and eventually dies, then it might be the exhaust tube seal. That exhaust tube seal keeps the exhaust from recirculating back up into the engine area and into the carbs. See if it runs different with the cowel off vs on. As mentioned, it could also be a carb mixture problem...meaning a flooding situation. Put it in a tub and experiment at idle...

The motor runs great at wot. When coming into the dock she will stall at idle. After stalling it is hard to restart. Last weekend we had the cover off at launch and there appeared to be smoke coming up from the area of the exhaust bellows.

The easiest things to do first is to decarb the motor and clean the recirculation system as dtherrien mentioned. If that dont fix the problem you are probably going to have to replace that exhaust boot gasket and possibly the adapter plate gasket. This would be a good winter project because it requires the removal of the powerhead. The job is not too bad however that powerhead probably has at least 85 lbs of weight to it. Good luck.
