Stalling at trolling speed

I have a '96 Johnson 150 Ocean Pro that tends to cough/spit and occasionally die while trolling at around 750-800 rpm's. If I bump the throttle to around 900-1000 rpms, I don't have this problem. The minor difference in rpms results in about 1/2-3/4 mph difference in my trolling speed and is just a bit too fast for the fishing I do. Any ideas on what may cause this problem and how to fix it? The motor has new plugs and the VRO is removed so I'm mixing fuel. However, this problem existed prior to removal of the VRO. I've been mixing OMC T24 in the fuel but it has not helped.

im not sure but it sounds like your plugs are fouling out. ive done this on alot of my outboards try pulling all your rods in and give the motor a good run to burn all the oil off then go back to trolling .gets frustating but it does work

Sounds like the sneezing may be due to a small vacuum leak, which may cause a lean condition. When VRO was removed was vacuum pulse line properly plugged (has connection to crankcase to VRO pump)?

You could carry a much smaller prop, if you're a long way from the ramp, and change down once out. This would allow you to keep a working rev and yet still troll.<br />Ross
