stalling when put in gear

i have a 1998 70 hp johson outboard, when i start it idles ruff when you put it in gear it will stall at low rpms if you get on the gas it will run fine. i think it is running rich because i see black sut on the motor and ground when running it. <br /><br />thanks <br />jim cav

What rpm's is it idleing at? Did you set the idle in gear in the water? If set in the driveway, it will definitely stall in the water.

Jim, Dave F. is right on target. The idle needs to be set with the rig in the water. Fact, wouldn't hurt to do a whole link/sync. Sounds like possibly one of the carb throttle plates may be still open when it should be closed.

You didn't mention which model number 98' 70 hp engine .4 cyl.throttle body injection?<br />3cyl.carburetor?If carbureted model,perform the link/synch mentioned by OBJ.Might also want to determine where the idle mix screws are set at on each carb by lightly seating them(clockwise)and counting the turns it takes to seat.Then back them back off to desired setting.I've found mine throttles up best opened to 2 3/4 - 3 turns open.Good luck.

Hey Guys<br /><br />Thanks for the info. I was lucky i had 2 problems the first was the vro / fuel pump failed putting to much oil in the gas thats the lucky part. After i fixed that and adjusted the carbs when it was in the water every thing was fine. thanks for the help.<br /><br />jim cav

I replaced the vro unit but i replaced it with just the fuel pump unit so i have to mix the gas and oil now. I feel better about mixing away that way i know that it wont be a problem. the new fuel pump was $165.00 vs $360.00 for fuel oil pump.

That's what I paid a few months ago for the new OMS. Actaully it was $371.

that included the installation labor and testing, right? The pump by itself is around $260.
