Hey guys,
Maybe someone can help me Im at my witts end. I have a 140 i/o merc 3.0 its been sitting for about 3yrs, and Im in the process of getting it going. I put fresh fuel in it and changed all the fuel filters and water sep filter. My problem is that it starts but dies after a few seconds I can see fuel going into the carb when i pump the throttle and the engine is off, and it will start for afew seconds with that fuel, also if I put fuel directly into the carb it starts but only for a few second until that fuel burns off when I try to rev it, it just stalls like its not getting fuel, I checked the fuel pump and it seam to be working well, the carb was replaced a few yrs back and has little hrs on it.any advice will be appreciated

What Bondo said, rebuild the carb.

It doesn't matter how many hours it has been used - It has been sitting for 3 years.

Is Carb rebuilding something that can be done with basic mechanical skill? I've never done one before but I've got a pretty good mechanical ability.

Are there rebuild kits available for these carbs? I've got the same setup.

Sure, just remember, take your time and keep it clean. When you dissassemble it, keep track of where everything came from. Some parts will get replaced, some will get reused. those that get reused, must go back exactly where they came from.

One additional point--get a good manual. I've had carbs apart that were put together wrong by previous shade-tree mechanics. You can't assume that everything is right as-is, especially when it comes to the check balls. However, if your pump is squirting, it sounds like the check balls are fine.
