I have a 1977 70hp Evinrude. The motor will start and run fine with the warm up lever in the up position. After allowing several minutes to warm up I lower the the warm up lever, the motor will not idle. I try to engage in gear to add more power to run but just cant get it to go. The motor will want to go, but will die. The tank is full, the fuel line bulb is very firm. The plugs are new. Could the fuel pump be the culprit? The carbs I was told could have a lean condition. Is rebuilding them a tough job? It appears in the manual that it is very easy. Are these particular carbs. difficult to rebuild?

You need a sync& link here, if one or more carb's are opening early you will have the problem you discribe. You will need a manual for this.

also you need to set the low speed idle screw adjustment. search Joe Reeves post "slow speed idle adjustment" has every thing you need. and there are plenty of post for the link and sync.

You probably already know that you have fixed jets in your carbs (no adjustment).

So R.Johnson is correct, you need the service manual to do the job right.

There is one on ebay now for your model: Service manual

Or you can order from KenCook.com, look under "portfolio".

Re: stalls & hard to idle

Thank you for your replies. On Saturday we made the decision to take the boat out, knowing there was some kind of problem we were extra cautious. The symptoms coninued for better part of the day. After trolling around for about four hours at 3.9 to 4.4 mph the motor decided to spit out whatever was choking it. The power came back with no warning at all. I dont know what the problem could have been. I am guessing there was a blockage in the fuel pump or somewhere in carbs. After the surprising return of power we were then able to run at 28.6 mph with no trouble at all. Should a carb. rebuild, fuel pump rebuild be in order? Should I put on an inline fuel filter? For all the help I have got in here, I cant wait till I have an answer for someone!!
