stalls in gear

1985 thundercraft 140 hp io started out with boat would not start. was told to drain gas, (bad gas) change all filters. which i did.replaced carb inlet filter, changed water seperator, rebuilt fuel pump(with new filter) changed coil.new plugs. it now has spark as it starts every time, when i put her in gear she stalls. tried adjusting carb still same problem

stalls quickly= check shift interupter
bad lower cable or drive issue

Sounds like a classic lower shift cable problem. When the cable gets worn, it tends to stick and engage the shift interrupter when you shift into gear. With the engine running, go look at your shift plate and have a friend shift into gear. If the interrupter switch gets pushed, it will stall the engine. Then you at least have an idea of what the problem is. As Bt Doctor said, it could be a drive issue or a faulty lower shift cable.

Ayuh,... The lower shift cable runs from the shift plate at the motor, to the outdrive...

Yer's needs replacin'....
