there seems to have been some confusion as which tank is which.

the single line tank is just that. one line to motor. it has a vent to allow air into the tank, while the fuel pump on the motor, draws fuel from the tank.
this is the single tank fitting.

the 2 line PRESSURE TANK, is just that, the motor does not have a fuel pump. the tank has a button on top, that is pushed multiple times, it pumps air into the tank, and builds air pressure. the air pressure forces fuel to the motor. once started the motor thru the connected air line, pumps air into the tank, to maintain pressure to force fuel.

these are pressure tank fittings.

Just to clarify, the primer buttons don't actually pump air into the tank. They just pump fuel to the carburetor. You pump up the button just as you would a primer bulb. This provides enough fuel to allow the air pressure provided by the motor to take over.

Not that it matters that much, but it is helpful (less confusing) to know when it comes time to rebuild the tank.

true Todd. and rebuilding pressure tanks is relatively easy.

Re: standard single line tank/ 2 line pressure tank.

I've been fishing a 1956 Evinrude with two 6-gallon pressure tanks for 15 years or so.
Let me tell you about my friend Max's theory, and his solution.
Max (who is deeply into old motors) believes, and I agree, that when left to sit, the gas in the hose seems to either evaporate or return to the tank.
Either way, this tends to leave mostly oil in the hose.
Which means that when you connect the tank, the first fuel that goes into the old motor is mostly oil.
Which makes it really hard to start.
So.
Max designed a special tool, made of copper tubing that allows him to pump the oil in the hose BACK into the gas tank.
He gave me one of his special tools.
After 10 or 15 pumps the color of the fuel changes dramatically.
Which is why I believe Max's theory.
And why I use that tool every time I start the Evinrude.
Which is probably why it starts so easily.
If there's interest, I can provide pictures of Max's tool.
Thanks everyone for a great forum.

I usually vent the tank with the motor still running (loosen the cap). This relieves the pressure in the tank/hose. From there I run the motor dry. Never have I had a hard start, even after winter storage. Rick

This is a 2 year old thread, hdman. Those guys are long gone.

You would do a lot better by starting your own thread.

You're in luck.
I happened to stay subscribed to this link.
So I'll see if I can make a photo in the next few days.
I'm traveling until the weekend.
Hope you're not in a big hurry.
Thanks for asking.

This is Max's Magical Machine for pumping the oil (that has accumulated in the fuel hose while in storage) back into the tank.
It consists of two brass tubes soldered inside a third copper tube.
One brass tube is for the top clip to grab.
The second is to open the fuel line.
This second brass tube allows you to use the button on the pressure tank to pump the oil accumulated in the fuel line directly back into the gas tank.
You pump it 10 or 15 times, and you can see the change in the color of the fluid from greenish (oil) to clear (gas).
I would have never thought of this.
Max did.
He's amazing.

Is at a problem to run the carb dry? This means that there is less oil in the cylinders as well.

Looks easy enough to make.
Will have to give it a try.
Thanks Rich!

I just stick a zip tie end in the fuel side of the connector and pump the primer until fresh fuel comes out (10 or so pumps) on tanks that have been stored for any extended time. If the tank hasn't been used in years, there's invariably dirty looking, thick oil in the line. I would NOT want to pump that into a freshly cleaned carb!

kbait, you seem to have figured it out too. When stored, the fuel mixture in the hose seems to become mostly oil or goo. So pumping it back into the tank and clearing the hose is really helpful in getting these motors started. Also, no, it's not a problem, and highly recommended that you run the carb until it's dry. This eliminates the same mostly oil or goo from remaining in the carb. Keep em running. -Rich
