As per Don S suggestion I am posting a new thread to see if I can get some help troubleshooting a large temp difference on my risers/manifolds on a 2001 merc 5.0 efi alpha 1. I am recovering from an overheated engine(my fault) and cracked head. New impellar, circulating pump, relatively new risers/manifolds(less than a year old), water hose feeding thermostat housing was back flushed to transom. All remaining parts of shutters(only metal pieces) were pulled out the exhaust y pipe from the transom side after full outdrive was removed. When i shot the temp of the risers and hoses with an IR gun the problem seems to be originating at the thermostat housing where the riser hoses connect. There is a 30-40 degree difference right on the housing when the engine is running. I have spent some time searching the web and one poster said their dealer puts a chunk on slightly smaller size hose inside the port side riser hose and this balances the flow imbalance? Id rather not change what the engineers at mercruiser designed except for the fact that they themselves change their recommendations after the fact, thru service bulletins. I have been hearing about check balls on the older thermostat housing used to balance the flow too? Any suggestions would be appreciated as well as if someone knows the standard running psi for the water at the risers/manifolds, this should be an easy way to test if one side is getting more water?

Ayuh,.... I don't see a problem,.....

Water follows the path of least resistence,... The riser temps are Never the Same,... Ever...
160? is Fine,.... No danger to anything downstream...
Btw,.. You did replace the shutters,..?? Right,..??

The check-balls are there only because the Alpha 1 pumps can't move enough water at idle....
Nothing at All to do with Balancing anything...
With the Openings in the risers, dumpin' the water, there's No Pressure,...
It's about the Flow, Not Pressure...
Can't have Pressure with nothin' to push against......

Thanks Bondo for the info. Yes i sure did replace those things. I bought the aftermarket ones and saved a few bucks but they are still real proud of them. All that little crap sure does add up though.

If you was doing your temp readings while on muffs, that will cause even a bigger swing in the temperature difference. Once you put the boat in the water with max output from the raw water pump, you should see the temps equalize, or close to it. Under load and running they will be even closer.

I was following the original the original post as well. I have a similar temperature difference that appears to be originating from the thermostat housing. I put it a clear tube to the thermostat housing and I have no bubbles. This issue has caused me no problems over the last 4 years (knock on wood). If you can find no problems, I'm beginning to believe that it's just the way that engine runs...

Look at post #19 here ->

There have been several posts on this over the years...

Ayuh,.... I guess the only cure for a Precieved problem might be a change of perception....

I think I will try a short 4" +- section of 5/8" tubing inside the port riser hose and see if the starboard stays cooler and report back.

I have the same problem. I switched hoses on the thermostat housing, port to starboard starboard to port, with clear hose. I ran it at 2000 rpm, the port ran hot and the starboard ran cool. The starboard side of the thermostat housing had air bubbles the port side did not. I read online where the same problem was corrected by changing the circulating pump. I am changing mine and will write back with the outcome. I changed the thermostat housing, thermostat and hoses.
