Ok guys I have a 1968 starchief. I am having a hard time getting it registered. I know where the serial number is and have located it. The people at the DMV want the Hull #. I was under the impression that they were the same thing but the DMV people lead me to believe that they aren't. If they are different where do I find the Hull # on this boat. Thanks for all feedback because I am clueless right know.

Re: Starchief Owners please help

you're going to love this. if it's anything like my 1964 Starchief, the HIN plate is an embossed foil item under the left side teak cockpit trim rail (runs along top edge of cockpit side panel)....so to get at it, you have to pull the 6' teak rail and if necessary the seat on that side. not sure what Starcraft was thinking......

If it helps any...

I have a tag (about 3" long) on the upper right hand side of the transom (on the outside).

Where'd ya find the so called serial number?

I see your local to me, not sure if it matters, but 2 years ago I registered a brand new 35 year old sailboat that was never registered. I went to the Grand Haven Secretary of State, it was very painless. I did have a hull ID though with a bill of sale.

dj this is the starchief that I bought in allendale in June. The serial numbers are off the 3x3 plate that says all the information about the boat. I told this to the lady at the DMV over in GR and she told me that those can't be the numbers because the HIN is engraved into the boat. We went round and round about it. So I figured I would look tonight for another numbers. But I have a feeling she is WRONG. I was thinking about tring Grand Haven Friday, everytime I have been there no fighting and hassel free.

i think the DMV lady is wrong. both the starchief and my '67 Holiday just have an embossed foil tag.....the numbers are stamped into it, but not engraved into the hull anywhere that i'm aware of.

Oh yeah, I forgot. So the PO didn't have any papers on it?

I wish I could help you but mine has no numbers. Your DMV lady is probably wrong. You may get somewhere if you ask to speak to a supervisor, although if the supervisor doesn't know either you may just be better off at a different location.

Re: Starchief Owners please help

dj the guy that I bought it from bought it from a guy in south haven. the guy in south haven bought it from a guy in fennville. The boat is registered in the Fennville guys name but when he sold it to the south haven guy they transfered title but south haven guy never registered it. So I am in the process of finding south haven guy to see if he still has the title or if he would get a duplicate for me. I have a feeling this is going to be a timely process. Oh yeah and about the numbers I called starcraft and the guy there told me that I was right about the serial numbers being the HIN. DMV lady was wrong. Anyways I am heading to the downtown location today then if that doesn't work I will head to Grand Haven Friday.

Rheagle- I went twice yesterday and the first time I spoke with the supervisor the first time, found some info on the DMV website then went back spoke with a different guy and he was like " oh yeah no problem let me get this done for you right now" I am thinking great but then he says let me ask my supervisor 1 quick question and it was downhill from there.

In Maine all you need is a bill o sale. If you don't have a HIN they will fax a form you fill out to the main DMV office and they will issue one for you on the spot. Very simple.

Well its done. I went to a different DMV and told the lady the same thing I told to others at the first DMV. She types somethings into her computer walks over grabs a 2014 registration tag ask me for $52 and says the title should be at my house in 7-10 business days. I don't know??????? but I am happy

Glad it worked out. FYI - HIN - 17 or so letters and numbers didn't start until 1972 and is on the starboard transom outside. My 1966 has the original Starcraft plate on the inner stbd. transom and has to be validated by a Dept. of Nat. Resources to register.

I went through the same thing. Got told something different everytime I called or went in. I was dealing with Mt. Clemens branch. The guy I bought it from was deceased, actually I bought it from his daughter. I finally got a letter from the office up in Vassar somewhere. Nightmare, glad it's over for you and me.
