Starcraft 221 repair help

Gents,
I am heartbroken. I just took my Starcraft out of Puget Sound, washed her thoroughly, and moved her down the road to where I hook up the out drive for cleaning. I ran into a low hanging, very thick pine branch. Pics show the damage. I took it to an insurance recommended marine repair shop in Tacoma area, labor is near $100 an hour, and the first thing the gent says is: your insurance company will probably total your boat...I was crushed. He explained it is the labor and the fact that the hard top may be too much to fix windows etc. Fact is, none of the supporting window brackets that also hold up the roof are bad, and the roof is fine. But I am not an expert. I will take it to another recommended shop, but seems to me that the shops Progressive recommends are for high end boats and mine is a little old Starcraft. Don't other places like RV repairs know how to fix stuff like this? If the Progressive guys says he will total and allow me cheap buy back, I could take it to someone who can work with what I have. Any advice? Also, the Raytheon dome is broken but Radar works. New covers are expensive but I can handle that. Thanks for your wisdom in advance! IMG_20131020_174941_111 - Copy.jpg

nice looking boat and that must have been some big branch. Check to see if they total it, what was the boat insured for? I had to put a price on mine on what I wanted for coverage. I know some states are different.
Yes an RV repair shop should be able to the repair, worth getting a quote from one. you could probably take the insurance money and fix it your self. Good luck and let us know how it turns out and pics of the repair.

Bummer,

Insurance guy only ask you to get 1 estimate?

Too bad Jas' Islander wasn't a hard top....

good luck how ever it plays out.

I see a late nite date w/ a chainsaw in that branch's near future................

That really suck, was a great looking boat.. It doesn't look to hard to fix, but like you say it is mostly labour and that is the expensive part these days if you can't do it your self.

If the insurance company were to total it you can still work a deal with them to buy it back for scrap/parts. Then use the rest of the money to fix it yourself or have it fixed. It would end up with a Salvage title but that doesn't hurt anything on a boat like that.

Whichever route you go, it looks like it would be super easy to fix. First thing I would do is dismantle the hardtop. Then you can just fix any bent/broken parts off the boat and once you have it all reinstalled just take it to any glass company and have them install some new glass in the old frames.

Ray, that sight nearly got me crying too. you're making me appreciate the desert, where we have no boat eating trees. that's a beautiful boat, even after the booboo. agree 100% with the others cept that you need to take about 2000 pictures before you start teardown, both so you can get it back together and to document. was that low hanging tree at a marina?

Wow, what a tragedy:blue:

Yah, I'm with what these guys are sayen....

Fist step, check to see if they will total. Then, if they do, figure out what they will let you have the boat for.

I'm looking forward to see how this plays out. Whatever happens, don't let them send that boat to the scrapper!!! She's ultra rare man, they don't make the Islander any more and very few of them have the hard top eh!!

Re: Starcraft 221 repair help

i was thinking about this last night (see how yer Starmada bretheren care about ya?). any place that builds T-tops and/or pilothouses (of which there have to be plenty in the Puget Sd area) should be able to either fix this or build a new top support framework if needed. so it's mostly a matter of fighting with Progressive on value in case they total it.....i'll be curious to hear how fairly they deal with the claim.
