Starcraft PM 180 - 1988 Max Hp

I have an 18' Starcraft (PM 180) that I am looking to upgrade the motor. The name plate on the boat states the max horsepower is 60 hp, and that is the current motor size, but seems under powered and a little small for an 18' boat. I have read that the max horsepower is 115 hp. I'm looking to go up to a 90 hp motor. Does anyone have an idea on the max horsepower rating.

What do you not understand about the rating plate? 60HP is the maximum safe HP.

Do you have any pics of the boat? I agree, that rating sounds WAY low. An 18' should be rated somewhere between 120-150. However, if it's a real shallow model, I could see the low rating.

Oddly enough, Iboats own spec sheet claims a higher HP.

Well, I take it back. I agree that an 18' planing hull is usually rated from around 115 to as much as 150.

My problem is the rating plate. Is the boat a tiller steer model? They are always rated much lower. . like half. . .the remote steer models of the same hull.

We need more info, Jim. Got pix??

I have done a little more investigation on this, and I originally questioned this because it was difficult to read the rating plate because it has faded over the years. But after cleaning the plate better I was able to verify that the name plate did indeed have a 60hp rating. Currently there is a remote steering console, but the boat was originally a tiller.

So, basically this is the case the JB discribed above, for this boat being that was oringally a tiller the max horsepower is 60hp and if the boat had a steering console when built the rating plate would read 115hp max.

Well since Starcraft IS in business.......... I would suggest you contact them directly. If the hull was built w/o a console then yes the HP rating will be lower then with a console.
