For those of you that may remember me, I was given an old silverline that is junk but the motor and trailer are good. I was looking for a cheap boat for the motor and trailer.

Well I think I found one. It's an older (but not as old as the silverline) starcraft alum, 16' or 17' (I didn't have a tape measure when I looked at it). It is sitting in the back row of a dealer. Looks like the previous owner made a custom wood floor, put in new carpeting, and put in a live well. It really looks nice actually. I figure it must have been owned by a person serious about fishing from the floor plan and all the rod holders. Unfortunately, the swivel seats were taken out so all that remains for seating is the bases.

Over all it looks to be in decent shape. The transom wood looks like it will be questionable in a season or two. It has a little water in the bilge but not much considering the rain we've gotten lately.

But here is my concerns. The first is the transon. Is the wood hard to replace for when it does go? Secondly, anybody have a geuss for hp rating on this? The plague with all the ratings is gone. This is a bigger v-haul hull. The dealer said it might be fine for my 110hp, but without the plague he said he won't mount my motor to it (I was going to anyways).

Now here is my other problem. Where do I scrap my old fiberglass silverline? Do landfills/construction waste sites take them if they're haulled in?

Thanks everybody in advance.

Oh ya, the starcraft is $100 less then my budget for a boat (which was $300).

Go For It.............

Old Starcrafts are Great to Work On,..... Mostly Pop-Rivits......

If that boat measures 18',... The 110hp will be at the Upper Limits........ That's a Merc. Tower of Power,.. Right,???
If it's really a 16 or 17',..... Well,..... I'd Do It,.... But I'm NOT saying that You Should..........

Over here,... I don't even have to make an old hull fit in a dumpster,... Just haul it to the County Transfer Station,+ Slide it off the wagon in front of a Pile of Junk,...... The guys there crush them with their Loader.......
Going rate here is $60.@Ton.........

BTW,...... If you ever Junkout the Starcraft,... They'll Pay You $600.@Ton for it at a Scrapyard......... :D

I think Bondo's wrong about 110HP being at the upper limits of an 18'

My '77 Starcraft Super Sport (18ft) is rated for 150HP.

Other than that, they're well made boats. My transom is in good shape, but from what others have written, it's not too difficult to change (off with the caps, and remove the screws/rivits).

For that price, I'd say it's a great deal.

I've got an 18ft Holiday I/O. The plate has no HP rating on it (I've looked carefully) but the manual I have claims 165HP. It came with a 140 hp I/O and now has a 115 hp O/B hanging off it. The transom was real solid 1 5/8ths plywood.

For my use, it's a great boat. Just wish it was an open bow.

I have a 1974 Starcraft 18ft Holiday which is rated at 140 hp o/b engine according to the manufacture.
Currently I have a 70 hp engine on it but I plan to put at least a 115.
Like tackle said the transom is real beefy - very strong!
Maverick - A friend just got a 16/17 ft like mine but no where near as deep and was rated for a 115 if I recall.
Once you get it on a trailer check the bottom under the drain hole .Many get pin holes from corrision because the drain hole is about 3 inch of bottom and to the right.

My starcraft is a 16ft and is rated for 85HP. Hopefully it is an 18ft which would be able to handle your motor. Maybe you could make the transom stronger by replacing it with more than one piece of plywood.

Chris

I have a 1975 18'Starcraft Holiday it's rated for a 140hp on the rating plate. I have a 92 Mariner 115hp on it currently and it halls *** for a bigger boat. Don't forget after about 1987 the motors were rated at the prop, the older ones were rated at the top end.
