First I love the forum lots of great info.
I have a 60 something starcraft 18 footer that needs a new transom sometime in the near future.
In order to get those corner end caps off do you just chisel off the rivets or is there a better way?

Re: Starcraft restoration transom end caps?

Welcome to iboats.

You have joined the restoration section where all of us starcraft addicts gather :D

They are riveted on  Most are held on with screws and bolts. Yes the corner caps need to come off. What kind of rivets are in there? Are the the same rivets as the hull? or are they pop rivets? I would use a nice sharp drill bit and drill just the head off of them. Nice clean and does no damage.

Post a few pictures of the end caps riveted on.... many of us would be curious.

Do like bob say's and whatever you do, if you think you're going to damage them, stop, take pictures and post them here. Those are hard little buggers to find and easy to damage.

I thought joeyplummley had a few photos on that topic - may want to search and read his resto thread.

(not that anyone else hasn't covered it... there are so many of us out there!)

But I recall him having pics and a few comments on how he tore into his. I remember because he popped the corners off and had to notch out the aluminum corner braces....

I have done some searches but didnt really come up with anything that was dealing specifically with what I was wanting to know (probably just me).
Is there a link somewhere on iboat forums that tells how to post a picture?

Hi there WestMi, welcome !! glad to see another michigan fan !!! it is the greatest forum for boating !!!!!!

its easy to post , you have to start a photo album , in someplace like photobucket , post them in there , then after that just put yiur curser on them and a box will pop up on the bottom , there will be four options , ING is the one you want !!!! ohh one other thing when you up load them make sure that you set the size to 640x 480 or they get too big for the page !!!

Other then that I agree with the drillingg them out , it is the easyest !!! so again welcome !! john

To remove the end caps should be the easiest to do compared with building and installing the transom and all the other stuff.
It held with easily accessible pop rivets and screws. Use 3/16 bit drill for the rivets.
Then you will have to cut the aluminum sheet on top a little.
This small notching will allow you to bend it up and gain access to the transom. (See pictures)

Re: Starcraft restoration transom end caps?

Thanks guys for the help.
This was probably the right boat at the wrong time so I have parted ways as I am a little time constrained right now.
I see how much a sickness this can become. :)
Once I can get caught up will likely be looking again for the next project.
