Cool project. Good to see the old boat staying in the family. Love the center console too!

Cheers from Aussie!

Nice to be back on a project and keeping it in the family, but I have to ask, is that all pressure treated plywood?

It looks dry, but is it kiln dried? And did you seal it in anyway before installation?

If it's not high end marine pressure treated plywood (like what pontoon boat makers are using) the chemicals in it can be caustic to the aluminum of your boat.

Hit the exposed transom plywood with some paint or spar varnish. It's showing it's age:

When you get a chance, it'd be well worth pulling the 'newish' transom ply and selling both sides, all the edges and through holes really well.

Depending on where you boat, the missing splashwell pan might be a good piece to put back on if you still have it. Even if you boat smaller, calm waters, slowing down off plane, the following swell can wash over a short transom.

Not many StarTreks in the Starmada, check out the Starcraft forum, lots of good stuff in there for tin boats

Yes it is pressure treated and I know you not suppose to use it on aluminum. I didn't know that at the time I purchased it and it was to late then so I let it dry out for prob 2 months then sprayed the aluminum down with bed liner spray where the wood would touch. And as the splash well I no longer have it. I took the boat out for a spin the other day and she did great no splashing over the transom the whole time

As JBC stated about the PT plywood, I'd keep a very close eye on your boat. Drying it out won't stop the problem. The chemicals can and WILL leach out of the wood when it gets wet and then the water will allow them to attack the aluminum. It's NOT just the contact points that you need to be concerned with. Those Chemicals are BAD and they will Attack the aluminum in very bad ways. We have examples here on the forum where they've actually corroded thru the entire boat extensive damage to extensive areas of the boat. We're only trying to make you aware of how serious this issue is and the problems that others have had. It doesn't take long for the corrosion to begin.

Well I guess I will keep a eye on it. I didn't know when I put the transom in about 6 years ago and it hadn't done anything to it yet.

This was my grandpas boat and the boat my dad grew up using and me when i was younger. About 17 years ago the transom got to rotten to use so we parked it in the back field and left it. So About 6 years ago i decided to restore it or try to. I completely gutted it and replaced the transom and just lost interest at that time. Well this past spring i really got back into restoring her and i have put a floor in put carpet down built the console rebuilt carb for the motor bought used controls for the motor installed them and put new steering cable in. We had a friend of ours give us a old bass boat they didnt want anymore so i used a lot of parts off that boat like the steering cable. the old bass boat come with a 86 evinrude 120hp that i need to put on something lol not to bad to be free lol. anyway here are some pics of the process let me know what yall think still have to make platform for the front and carpet it. then paint the boat later on sometime not in a huge rush since this is going to be a fishing boat! click on the link to look at the pics. for some reason it wouldnt let me attach any. Go ahead and let everyone know since i have had other people tell me about pressure treated plywood on aluminum, yes it is pressure treated wood when i bought the wood i didnt know i wasn't suppose to use it but it was to late then so i did some research and i let it dry out outside for 2 months and sprayed bedliner spray on the aluminum where the wood would come into contact with the boat but im going to keep a eye on it! http://s1113.photobucket.com/user/anthonyjjjohnson/slideshow/boat

If posts look a little screwy date and time-wise, it's because your two threads have been merged, Since you are working on a ,the Starcraft forum was the logical destination.

Welcome to the Starmada seapro :welcome:

That's a cool center console design! And great use of available resource! That's our credo! :)

Just a few recommendations:
  • to echo what the other guys said...(and as I guy restoring a badly corroded vessel)...you should consider removing the PT plywood entirely.
  • Add a splashwell...treks have a narrower beam and more draft...plus it adds a lot of support to the hull; you'll experience less twist.
  • Was the forward bench added back? Our boats like to get floppy when pieces get removed. And when they get flopping, they crack-up...literally!

Lost the splashwell need to try to find it, it may be around here some where I'm still not done with the boat yet but instead of a bench seat we use to have a platform there I'm going to replace it. Setting that the boat was free and I don't have the resources to replace all the wood I'm going to leave it inand see how it goes since I put a barrier between the aluminum and wood. But I do need to try to find splashwell
