Well, my SS basket case came with a 1/2" thick plate of Aluminum that had been on the outside of the transom, under the motor. I some ways it looks as though it was original equipment, but in others it just looks like something added to support a rotted transom. Can someone tell me if this is OEM or not?

1/2 inch thick that's a healthy pc of alum. others have stated that they had a pc of wood there, some replaced with another material. i don't think it was orginal, but there seems to be plenty of room to keep it if you wanted

Mine has/had the wood one, I'm going to replace it as it was rotten. Don't think you 'need' it per se,{maybe vibration control?} but in my case the added dimension will fill the motor clamp/base to almost the maximum 2-1/4 inch opening on my Johnson...should make for a custom fit look with no wasted space...well, that's my story & I'm sticking with it :p:D

It had been installed with 3" long plain steel flat head bolts, that were rusted, and caused the the Aluminum to corrode badly around the holes. Due to the availability, and price of 3" SS bolts, I think I'm going to leave it off, if its not needed.
Is there any place to get a new transom cap? or does anyone have a good method of making a new one?

Re-install the plate since your are not using it for strength it will work very nice....... clean it up, treat with alodine, zinc chromate and paint it to match the boat!

Transom cap...... I used 2" x 2" thin aluminum angle iron on my smaller Starcraft. I made a few relief cuts and a rubber mallet to shape it.... and it has worked ;)
