i just bought my first boat, it's a starcraft 16ft aluminum. the transom is clearly weak and slightly warped. there are no cracks but the motor is too heavy for it and its pulling it backwards. how would i go about fixing this? am i able to just remove and replace the plywood without too much of a problem? i know this is a common issue that is all over forums, but without knowing much about boats it's hard to do my own research. i need somewhat detailed answers. i have attached pictures. thanks.

Re: transom repair help

Hello,

That looks to be a rotten transom. there are a ton of threads on here for replacing the transom on Starcrafts just do a search and you will find them. Also take a look in the Starcraft forum as most are posted there. I just finished replacing mine with the help of these forums and with out them I had no clue what I was doing. but it came out nice. Post more pics in the Starcraft forum and you will be graeted by the crew.

Welcome to iBoats!

I am not a Tin Boat Guy, but there are Plenty of them on the forum. I'm sure you will have all the help you need. This is a Typical Repair and there are LOTS of examples to help guide you thru the process. It IS something you can do with basic tools. Will not be that difficult of require that much of your time. I do know that you should NEVER use TREATED PLYWOOD in an Aluminum boat. It will cause a very bad chemical reaction. You should just use AC Exterior Grade Plywood.

Welcome to the forum. Your motor isn't too big (in fact that is a fantastic motor and in my opinion the ideal motor for a 16' Starcraft) but your transom is definitely rotted. Replacing it isn't too big a deal and just about every one of us Starcraft guys, of which there are many on this site, have done. Basically just remove the motor and anything else attached to or bolted through the transom, removed the capping and any other through bolts, (hopefully) use the old one as a template and cut out 2 new pieces from 3/4" marine grade or regular exterior grade plywood, laminate them together using PL Premium construction adhesive or epoxy resin (or gorilla glue or Titebond III), seal it using any number of methods, paint it, and reinstall.
