Start problems with 91 J115TLES

The motor was running fine, or so it seemed. I discovered an air leak in my fuel hose. It caught up to me late last season and left me at the ramp and wouldn't start. Needless to say I didn't get the engine fogged before storage.

I've found the air leak, but the engine would not start. I read the secret file and found that the engine will fire by injecting fuel/oil mix into the cylinders. I figured that everything just may be flooded with oil. Seems thats what it was as oil poured from the carb cover as I loosened it off. I then tried injecting fuel/oil into the carbs. Engine fired. But it wouldn't run by regular start sequence.

I pretty sure I have some cleaning to do, and possibly some replacing. Where and what should be done?

Is it safe to run the engine by the red levered primer valve on the solenoid? Found it would run by this but I tried it for a short period of time. The engine would quit when put back.

I also discovered that water is leaking from around one of the spark plug holes. I am hoping this is just a water jacket gasket. There was no water in that cylinder or any of the others.

I do have a service manual and have a bit of mechanical savvy. Perhaps just enough to be dangerous.

So, am I in a lot of trouble?

Very best,

Al

Sounds like fuel starvation. Go through your fuel system with a fine toothed comb. Starting with carb kits and inspect for visual leaks while running the motor.

You'll get some mix in the air box when the motor is tilted as the float needle may not be fully closed because of the angle. You could have a bent reed spitting gas back out of the carb. Process of elimination or you could get unlucky like me and still be scratching your head a year and a half later, good luck and happy hunting.

Yes, I agree a fuel starvation issue. I think I fixed that. But now I think that everything is full of oil and am looking for ideas of how to clean it all up. I'd like to avoid a full carb re-build. Haven't done it before. Would the VRO be damaged from pumping straight oil?

Then the water leaking from next to the spark plug hole. Is that fixable without buying gaskets.

My biggest problem is obtaining parts. Our closest boat dealer won't touch a Johnson or Evinrude so he won't have parts. Everything would be mail order. I can do that, but I need a complete list before doing so.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Al

Nah, you can't hurt that vro pump. Is the water leak coming out of the head between the gasket? or out of a fitting?

If the carbs need cleaning and you don't do it you may find yourself rebuilding the powerhead as well as the carbs.

I can see where the gasket is pushed out from between the head and the head cover. Water appears to be coming from there. Guess I'm ordering gaskets. Does part # 0318335 sound right? Or is there anything else I should be looking at as a cause for the gasket fail?

Thanks,

Al

errrmm. Point taken!

I'll order a couple repair kits along with the head cover gaskets as well. Part # 0398526 sound right? I'm a little nervous about doing this. Might as well replace the fuel filter as well I guess.

Anything else?

Go to shopevinrude.com, they make it easy to find what you need. I'd order carb kits while i was at it, as dhadley said you might find yourself needing a new powerhead. Get a good manual and go step for step they're not that hard to do.

Go to shopevinrude.com, .

Okay, tried to log into this site and it directed me to the bombardier site. Even cleared the cookies. They say I cant order parts directly, that I have to go through a dealer. Any pointers on where to go?

Thanks,

Al
