OK guys, I have a 1975 85HP Johnson, its been sitting for 3 years, I started it up today and it ran fine, let it run about 5 minutes, when I went to start it again it started at WOT or it seemed that way and had to shut it down, since then everytime I start it, its like WOT again. Any idea what this could be?
Thanks
Joe

Is it on a boat in the lake or on muffs? Need to check index marks with hood off. If on boat, may have some cables that need lubed. On muffs, they have no back pressure and run a lot faster than in the water and can over rev.

I have it on muffs, do you think I should try a water tub?

before starting again, have someone work the controls, and make sure all the linkages in the motor are moving and returning to the idle position, sounds like the linkage is stuck. is your fast idle lever up.

Thanks guys for the replies, I don't know what index marks you are talking about. All the linkage seems to be working, but I don't know what the fast idle lever looks like. This is my first outboard so its like a learn as you go thing here.
Thanks

I got it running OK today, it turned out to be the linkage, when I was putting the throttle cable and shift cable on I was moving everything around, cleaned it and lubed it and it's OK. Thanks guys, but I know I'll be back.
