The starter is very sluggish when cold. It cranks just enough to start motor but very slowly. It works just fine when warmed up.Have replaced all electical lines & solenoid. Do you think this is just the brushes, something else or do I need to do some diagnostics?

Thanks in advance and this forum is great. Have learned quite a bit since joining.

Hi, Dave.

Could be the starter, could be the battery, could be the wiring.

Measure battery voltage with the starter engaged. If it drops below about 9volts it hasn't adequate charge. Try again after the warm-up. If the voltage is then higher, you may have a slow short leaking battery charge. Troubleshoot for an electrical leak when the electrics are supposedly off.

If the battery voltage is up, say over 10volts, measure the voltage from the starter terminal to the block with the starter engaged. If it is also up. . . over 9 volts, remove the starter and clean the surfaces that contact the block. If you get the same result, clean the commutators and put in new brushes.

If battery voltage drops below 9volts with the starter engaged when cold or warm, test the battery condition with a hygrometer for a weak or dead cell.

Good luck. :)

phatmanmike

We should definitely keep in touch. I only paid $250 for the motor and it runs great. Where in south Florida do you live? I just moved up here from Deerfield 2 years ago.

JB

Thanks for the tips. The battery is brand new and I am using new 4 ga. wires. I should have mentioned the battery is brand new. I will probably just change the brushes. I guess after 24 years they're a little worn.
