Hey folks,
I just bought a '76 85 hp Johnson and the guy had a new solenoid and starter on the engine. The first thing I noticed was that the new solenoid was not the right one for this motor. I have had it 3 weeks and been running it at home fine tuning it to get it ready for the water, when the new starter's abendix wont come off the flywheel when I started it. I got it off of there and then it wouldn't jump up but just spin sometimes.... The problem kept getting worse until now it sounds like grinding and it wont spin hardly at all.
1) Is there any way to replace just the abendix or does it sound like I should have the starter rebuilt?
2) Could the wrong size solenoid have led to the new starter going out in a matter of a month?

Thanks guys in advance!

spray the bendix splines with some electrical cleaner to cut any crud that may be on the splines....never grease them use a drop or 2 of 3-1 oil on the bendix splines.....

yes you can buy new bendix drives....

when the bendix stuck to the fly wheel did u shut down right away...how are the teeth on the bendix....if chewed up bad replace....if not like I said clean the splines on the starter under the bendix....lube lightly...and try it

Well that didn't work but I can probably tell you why.. . . . when I opened up the starter (after that didn't work) I saw that the circular plate of magnet that goes around the whole start was broken into about 6 pieces....I'm just taking a guess but am going to say that's probably why its not running. Can you replace just that or od you have to rebuild the whole thing???
