On my 87 OMC cobra w/3.0L I have an alternator and starter that are both in rough shape (some rust and both are missing a post). The question is should I have them rebuilt or should I buy new ones. Obviously money is a factor, but I would be willing to spend a little more if a new motors would be significantly better than rebuilt. Thanks for the feedback. I learn more every day from this board.

Re: Starter, Alternator.. Rebuild or purchase new?

If you are shopping for a remanufactured starter or alternator, the Arco Co. in Florida is one of the best sources -- can buy their products on this site or at various retailers (e.g., Boat U.S.).

If you are missing posts due to rust, you have some serious problems -- need to find the source of the moisture. A starter or alternator with that kind of damage might be too far gone, but a reputable rebuilder can tell you whether they can be rebuilt (and whether they need to be -- can test both). If you don't know of a rebuilder, check with your auto mechanic to see who does their work. Make sure the rebuilder does marine rebuilds.

good luck.
