Starter and Trim Tilt (v-150 1986)

After running for over an hour I go to start up after some fishing and the starter gear is not popping up to engage the flywheel. We ended up pull starting the motor and it fired right up. Does this require the started to be replaced, or can the Bendix drive be replaced?

Then, I'm approaching my slip and I go to tilt up a bit, as I usually do, and the motor is barely moving up at all. Eventually, the motor did come up enough I could get in, but then my fishing partner physically assisted the motor to the full up position while I was holding the button.

Has anyone had these experiences? Any tips, ideas on where to start with the trouble shooting?

I did some voltage checks and the battery is fully charged and voltage is at the starter motor. I have virtually no experiance with tilt unit.

Thanks in advance

on the tilt unit check to fluid level.. if you can hear the motor running it may be low on fluid of seals inside maybe leaking....

Carl, Both troubles you have described could be due to a common electrical problem. They may also not be related. I would put a volt meter on the battery and try the starter. I would then repeat the test measuring voltage at the starter itself. If there is a difference in voltage, you need to trace it to the wire or connector that causes this high resistance. It may heat up and start smoking.

If the battery drops below 11V, with the starter just spinning (not engaging the motor), you likely have a bad (shorted) starter or a bad batttery. Unfortunately, to check either requires a ammeter capable of 500Amps.

The same checks are required at the trim motor and the battery. Since both these problems started at the same time, you can check for common items (battery, batt cables...). Don't forget the motor quick electrical disconnect plug.

Thanks for the help folks. I replaced both battery cables and starter cables and both the starter and power tilt worked fine. I made sure all the connections were shiny clean and afterward charged the battery for good measure. You guys were right on!
