Heres one i hope someone can answer.i broke the long inside starter bolt on my g.m. 3.0 ,4 cyl.

It's to hard to get to to drill out without pulling the engine.it has a bracket on the rear of the starter bolted to the block. You think it will hold for the rest of the season with the one short bolt about one more month?? i hope so..thank you

Re: starter bold busted

i think that you will break the other bolt and may damage the ring gear because of bad starter line up

is the other bolt broken off flush with the block or can the starter be droped down and pull the bolt with vise grips

this has come up here before and it seams that everone agreed the only thing to do was pull the motor because there is no drilling acess

tommays

Re: starter bold busted

do yourself a favor , pull the engine! almost impossible to drill the broken bolt straight enough to use an easy out.

Pulling the engine is the best way, just be gentle with the easy-out.If it dosent budge drill to normal retapping size and retap.Put 2 new bolts in too.

Re: starter bold busted

This exact thing happened to me. I continued to run the boat with only the one smaller bolt holding the starter in. Two things happened: pinion gear would no longer properly align with flywheel unless I tightened that bolt EVERY time I started the boat, and after about 5-6 times of doing that, the whole starter broke off due to too much stress on that side.

Engine had to be pulled out. No other way to do it, really.
