I have looked around and not seen any other posts about the starter bolts stripping out and breaking on older Johnsons. My neighbor said its a common problem though. Im goin to drill out and helicoil, but I was wondering if there are any other ways to help from the problem happening again. I was hoping some one designed a retro fit bracket or something to take a little of the strain off the single bolt on the front of the motor. Any help would be appreciated.

keeping all the bolts tight is the fix.

Got the old one drilled out and heilicoil put in. I also installed 2 studs in the intake manilfold and put an 1/8 in. steel plate between to help wedge the starter in and take some of the strain off of the single bolt on the front of the motor. I made sure to use lock washers on all bolts, and I will remember to check the tightness often. I hope it lasts!!!!

How about a photo to show us all ???
You beat me to it getting them out. I was going to advise a left hand drill bit and run the drill unit in reverse. A lot of the time the broken piece will unscrew itself as you are drilling.

That starter is heavy. A out of balance prop will shake it loose from the block.

Re: Starter bolts broken 72 85hp johnson

Ive got the starter holding great now, but something I have done has caused the motor to run bad. It idles 500 rpms higher now and seems to miss. Its almost like a bad vacuum leak or too much fuel or something. Is there anything i could have done to screw something up to make it run bad. It normally idles at 650 rpm and now its almost 1200 rpm. I took off the top carb to get a better angle on taping out the hole, but i took it apart and it seem to be ok , and just the same as it was before. If i spray a little carb cleaner on the bolts i tapped out it bogs down also. any help would be great.

It might be leaking a little bit. I shoot the carb cleaner around the gasket, and It bogged down a little bit, but not as much as when I spray the starter bolt holes? I dont get it??? It got to be something simple cause it ran great before I lost the starter.
