Starter Cord won't retract (2hp Evinrude)

I have a 1981 Evinrude 2hp. My started cord won't retract without some jiggling. I read the posts on this subject and want to spray WD-40 on it but I'm concerned about removing the cover. Will the spring come apart if I remove the cover? Thanks!

You can remove the cover complete with recoil starter but do not remove the screw through the top of the cover.
