Hi guys :)

managed to get my starter out from under my 4.3 efi, have taken the manifold off so it wasn't too bad!

but, now to disassembly, i took the bolts out running the length of the starter, and the end off, i assume that the interior section i can pull out? i've tried giving it a tug but it wouldn't give.

When i turn it by hand should the bendix move also or does that only happen with an electric current, am i correct in thinking that the bendix moves forward to engage the flywheel and then goes back after, that's why it's recessed now?

is there a way of testing it out of the boat? i've got my boat at a friends house so i'm travelling to and fro at the moment, i do have a battery here through, can i hook up the negative and then touch the pos to start the startert motor?

thanks guys

Re: starter disassembly

Looks like it`s been under water, better off replacing it.

Re: starter disassembly

hehe, ok thanks guys :)

I can't see a number on the starter, i have a 4.3 efi merc, 2001, i see a few that would fit a 4.3, and they state they do, so i guess it's the bolt configuration i need to look at on mine and get the same

Re: starter disassembly

That's a Delco PG260F1 starter, used from mid 90's to present. By the look of the one you have... don't even think about repairing. When you get the new one, replace the 2 long bolts that hold it all together with S/S... will save you grief in the future.

Re: starter disassembly

out of curiosity what's the difference between the high torque 1.7kw and 1.4kw starter motors? well ofcourse i know the former is more powerfull, what i mean is what difference does it make to starting? why do some 4.3's have lower torque one and mine the higher torque

i've seen loads of sites advertising the lower kw version and saying it fits the 4.3 also

for example http://repower-marine.com/content/view/59/55/

thanks :)
