starter disengaging

90 HP merc 6 cyl 1987: I was out on the lake today, here's what happens: Warm engine everything is great. If starting cold, ( I finally figured out the starting procedure) I run into some trouble. If the motor does not kick, the starter will engage and turn the motor over for as long as you hold the key. Once you have gotten enough fuel to the motor (choke etc.) to start, the starter will engage and you can feel the ignition kick begin. Once the motor kicks, the starter disengages. You have to wait for the starter to stop spinning and then key it again. The starter will engage until she kicks and then disengages. It feels like she wants to start but the starter won't get her there. At some random point enough power is given by the starter and she fires off. The battery is fully charged (one month old) the contacts on the battery are clean. I don't feel like I can count on the motor if I sit for a while. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks
G

Try not advancing the throttle...as what you are getting is lean pop at start up.

Or do not raise it as high.

TMD

Hey Marine Doctor. I tried to do what you said but it is still happening. She turns over and wants to fire but the starter disengages making that spinning starter sound. When the starter comes to a stop after about 15 tries she kicks off and runs fine. It reminds me of my old mustang that had a bad solenoid and bad wires.

Sounds like your starter may have a worn bendix(pinion) gear. It may only be that the starter shaft is just gummed up preventing the gears from fully meshing. Inspect the gear for excess wear and clean the shaft with a few squirts of wd. Work the gear by hand a few times while doing this to loosen up any dirt that may have accumulated. You might also want to make sure that the starter mounting is tight. Work safe. Disconnect the battery!!
Good Luck and Good Boating.+
