starter engages ands spins

i have a 1981 johnson 25hp
i am having problems with the starter, it all started by it spinning and not engaging. I oiled it down and cleaned it up. now it will engage the fly wheel, but the shaft inside the worm gear will spin and the worm gear will sit engaged with the fly wheel and not spin??????????

any ideas????

I have the same year but a 60HP 2 Cylinder. I am having the same issue. I removed my starter and disassembled the worm gear. It did not appear worn inside.

I removed the spark plugs and tried the starter once I put it back together It turned the fly wheel no problem. Put the plugs back in same problem. I can turn the flywheel by hand with the plugs. It feels the same as it always did. I just think my worm gear is shot, but I couldn't find one in stock. I have a vacation in 2 weeks and have not had time to work on the boat until now.

Unfortunately I order my starter from West Marine. The box was labeled correctly but the starter inside was not the correct one. It did not even look the same. It mounted properly but the worm gear was too small.

I spoke with a tech at West Marine. They will call the warehouse on Monday and also Sierra to see why they sent me the wrong starter in the correctly labeled box.

I took pictures of my old starter and the one they sent me to fax to them. I also sent them a page from Sierra's web catalog which show the correct starter.

Hopefully they can get me the right starter soon so I have a boat!

Brendenk..... That bendix gear has a clutch within it which is obviously bad. Replace that gear.

i thought it might be the bendix gear
i will replace that first
