Sorry to adminstrator. I think I asked this question in another way but I have news to report. I ordered aftermarket Starter. The bolts don't line up to the bracket. They are off maybe 16th or 8th of inch, I did my home work. Any way old one that came with bracket it way beyond repair, unless they can rebuild with just housing, guts are shot. Then for sure would fit. My question though is. Does anyone have part number of proper sized starter I need?

Here's what I know. By 1971, they were using a 12 Volt starter, which probably is what you got. Now the question becomes has somebody put an old 6 Volt starter and bracket on your '71? Yes, the 6V and 12V starters had different spacing. You can order the "proper" 1971 12V starter all day long and it won't fit an old 6V bracket.

About your worn-out starter--does it have a metal inspection band around the bottom end? Yep, that would be a 6 Volt starter.

I went to my local Armeture store. They called me yesterday to say it was ready, but they were already closed so I don't know what actual work they did. Rebuild or just move screws .It has 12v on it. I will call the guy that I got it from to see what engine he took it out of. Thanks for replies

You have an old time starter and generator shop available to you? Be nice to them.

My local starter alternator shop closed up.-----All the parts and stock are going as scrap value I think.-----Folks would rather support AMAZON than the local grey haired expert.----Folks want stuff fixed instantly.----AMAZON is good at doing that for some coins.
