how do find out what starter i jneed for 25hp johnson model no.j25reda its a 1996 .the starters is working but every so often it doesnt kick up but spins every time

Lube the top starter shaft with 3 in 1 oil, it's getting hung up due to lack of lubrication or the battery is weak, connections bad. Try the 3 in 1 first.

thanks ill try that. how would i find out witch one i need . evry parts site i go to does show my model. they show a few differant ones for 25 hp but nothing that says model j25reda

That's a rope start model number. The starter was probably added later.

Model J25REDA is a rope start motor, so if yours has a battery operated starter, it was added on!

Looking at the OMC diagrams for a J25REDA won't show anything except the manual recoil starter.

Or have I misinterpreted your problem?
