Starter goes on on running engine, 1979 85HP Johnson

Hi, I have 85 HP 1979 Johnson (85ML79R).
I noticed that when accidentally turned key to START position while engine was running that starter went on crashing bendix teeth.
I thought that starter is supposed to be blocked from running while engine is running.
Am I wrong or something is not right with motor?

Time to review the wiring.----Risk of damaging ignition and battery charging components now.

Wrong. Nothing blocks the starter except the driver. Don't turn it to "START" and it won't happen.

Perhaps you are thinking of safety switches that prevent starting the motor with the controls set in gear. That's a different subject.

Just reread the post.----If motor is running in neutral then yes the starter will engage if you turn it to start.------My truck likely has a feature on it's computers to prevent that.----Can't lock the doors when key is in ignition.-----Diesel engine starts up when I am working in the garden with key in my pocket too.-----I want to disable that remote start feature.

toggle switch under steering column (under dash panels)? Switch it off.
