Hi
I have a 1971 Chrysler motor. The starter gear that turns to turn the flywheel touches the flywheel slightly after it starts and causes sparks. Inside the gear there is a groove on something around the shaft that the gear is on. I checked it manually and noticed you can turn it clockwise (the starter gear) about a quarter turn and it will ride up this groove in the starter and slightly touch the flywheel. so when it starts the vibration causes this starter gear to turn slightly and ride up the groove to the point where it touches the flywheel gear and causes sparks. Seems like the spring has nothing to do with it. The spring hold down what is suppose to. just that this gear rides the groove up.
