okay. new to me 1990 sunbird with gm vortec motor v6 4.3l
winterized properly but 5 yrs ago! Stored indoors but heres what Ive done and know. if anything.

starter new when put away. but I did rebuild it from alot of corrosion. and it starter to spin the motor again. but VERY SLOW. and it draws the BRAND NEW battery down VERY VERY quickly. after 4 tries of starting it for only 3 sec increments battery drained pretty bad. This does seem normal as You could crank over a car many many times before battery is drawn way down so it has no more cranking amps.

Soaked for last couple of days marvels mystery oil in cylinders to "free" it up as it was initially slightly stuck when I first turned by hand. Also poured some over the valves via oil breather and spun it with starter without sparkies and was also very slow. I little worse with spark plugs in but not too much worse.

BUT where Do I go from here.

Is there a way to "load Test" the STARTER to ensure its got the right about of torque or oof?

Could new battery be a dud, Im thinking of getting it load tested to rule that out.

I thought I read here there are two other coils that power the starter too? if those are bad could that cause starter to not have enough to properly turn the motor? I plan to take a vid to show you guys how slow she is.

Just seems to me that MAYBE the starter IS OK as it its drawing alot of power/juice to turn the motor and my theory is that maybe its drawing the battery down so bad cuz its taking everything it has to turn a stiff motor. IF the motor is still TIGHT how else Do I losen it up/free it up? Been soaking cylinders in oil. Does seem to have a really tight spot when shes is spinning? is that where the motor was "stuck" and caused a bad area on the cylinder walls?

I guess I dont know what to check next? Hate to buy a new starter if its not the start as now that I rebuild it she does spin the motor. but Alot of draw and not fast enough.

after battery drawn too far down no wires nor is starter warm nor has never "smoked"

Where the hell do I go from here!!!!!!!!!!!!! Im stuck at this point basically.

Whats the purpose of the two extra starter coils as cars dont have them.

its hard to turn motor by had but does not seem to be too much harder than my truck! hard but turns...both....

I got spark too, I checked that.

Thanks SO SO much. I know its been covered alot and have read martys post on same thing from a week ago.

You could try turning it over a few revs by hand and see if it feels that tight. I would take the starter to a rebuild shop or somewhere where they can do a real load test, not Kragen's.

cr2k.

Thanks...so such a test does exist for starters cool!!!!!

Im reading about the voltage drop test and will do that and if that checks out i will put the starter and take that in and get tested......

Anybody have the reason for the slave or secondary coils in these boats unlike cars have?

Thanks.

If you ran the battery down after cranking the engine for a total of 12 seconds, I think the battery charge may have been low to start with. I say charge it over night at a low amp setting and try again in the morning.

Ayuh,... Because the keyswitch is maybe a couple of feet from the starter in a car, vs. Many feet in a boat...
And,...
It sounds to me like the starter is Junk...
