I have an old Mercury 50hp 500E late sixties. The problem I am having is you can hear the starter running but isn't kicking the gear up to engage the flywheel. Any ideas what can be done to fix it, or do I need to get a new one?

The battery cables on right?I had them on backwards once and blew the rectifier. But started right up when I had them on right.
That check Ok then the bendix on the end can be replaced.Take it to a starter shop.
Try a touch of WD-40 on the worm gear.J

Re: Starter Help!!!

MASS DAVE it was I who had starter probs. Squirt a LITTLE 3 in 1 oil, maybe 2 or 3 drops on the shaft that the sprocket from the starter is on. Also squirt 2 or 3 drops ABOVE the sprocket. You're squirting oil above and below the sprocket. (actually, now that I think about it, you prob don;t need oil ABOVE the sprocket, but I don;t think it can hurt, so give er a squirt!) Hope it works for you...worked for me like magic!
