I have a 18 evenrude 1973. It has a starter but no one has ever hooked it up. Would a riding lawnmower selenoid and high cranking amp batt. be enough? I just think it would be plenty but i dont know how many amps it pulls. And i would like to do it this way because i will have a batt. up front for my accesories. And also this system cant be wired to charge can it

Re: starter hook up

That engine will not charge the battery. There is no stator in it.

Engine has a starter motor but no solenoid, odd. Is the mounting bracket for the solenoid still attached to the engine? Personally I would just get the correct parts then there is no guessing.

Theres a good place to mount it I am concerned about the amp draw wich i think there is no more than a large lawnmore engine. I can buy a large lawnmower battery for a third of a marine batt.

Without charging a small battery wouldn't give many, if any starts between charging. An auto solenoid would be a really bad choice. I'd get a standard car battery, a proper solenoid, and a wiring harness. See the sticky for salvage yards, where you could get the solenoid and wiring inexpensively and have the right stuff.

If yo go to the electronic parts catalog on the Shop.Evinrude.com website http://shop2.evinrude.com/Index.aspx?s1=gk984pufbl6jmpdmr5nvr518k7&catalog_id=0&siteid=1
Select "OB Accessories" from the drop down list
then go to 1973, then go to Electrical you will be able to find a couple of parts lists and diagrams showing all the parts used to convert the motor to electric starting.

There is no battery charging option.

Re: starter hook up

As for cheap marine batteries, I picked up a new Interstate blemished battery from the Interstate store for $50. It was cheaper than any where I looked and had a better warranty.
