Been a minute since I posted here.

Broke the starter rope last week.
Went to replace it and there are problems with the two interlock cams/levers. They no longer work to prevent starting in gear.
I know it is a safety concern to "thwart safety features", but if those two items were removed, are there any operational faults introduced?
It does not look like the parts are ALL available to repair those mechanisms anyway, so I am leaning towards just removing the parts that do not actually work any longer.
(BTW, I am the only operator, running OBs for 65 yrs. This is the first one I have had that has this safety feature.)

Opinions?

Buy and install a 3 pole roller micro switch. Where the shift lever linkage passes near the engine block somewhere. My 1986 30 hp motor. DO NOT drill into a water passage. IF you do ? Drill and tap the 2 holes. Dry the holes. Coat the screws threads with some Silicone Rubber. will last over 20 years.

I have a 1991 Evinrude 8 HP that I bought brand new and that broke twenty years ago.

I like it because lots of times I back off beaches in windy weather and I can start it in reverse.

So you removed those parts with no resulting problem?

Didn't need to....the stopper broke at the flywheel. The parts your talking about are unnecessary for operation of the outboard, strictly a safety device
