I took my outboard out of winter storage. I am having a starter issue.

The starter gear fully engages the fly wheel but then stops. The starter motor and starter shaft are going like crazy but the gear doesn't move. Like it is slipping on the shaft rather than turning.

I took it apart and cleaned everything up and still it slips once engaged. The starter motor sounds strong and the shaft looks brand new. I looked inside the gear and it didn't look like it was damaged. But still the shaft spins like crazy and the gear stays still.

Do I only need a new starter gear or should I buy a complete replacement starter?

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

Also if I need either parts or a full starter where should I get it from? I need it in 2 weeks before I go on vaction.

Thanks in advance!!!!

Re: Starter Issue - Rebuild or Replace

Looks like the: ELECTRIC STARTER AMERICAN BOSCH 11229-21-M030SM
Because of the spring assembly and the bendix gear looks to match. I guess the person added the top nut so it wouldn't back out.

0384781 for the bendix gear or drive assembly

Might be the in the link below but I'm not 100% sure.

Re: Starter Issue - Rebuild or Replace

I have not been able to locate a replacement bendix gear that is in stock and ready to ship. The only thing I have been able to track down is the whole starter.

What causes the gear to fail? It did not look worn when I took the drive assembly apart. Is there a way to fix the gear? (Probably Not...)
