I have a 95 bayliner 1750 with a 3.0 Mercuriser 135hp. I took it out saturday and everything was fine all day. Went back out on Sunday and went to put it in the water and just got a click click... sounded like the battery was dead. I have 12 volts on both batterys. Did some trouble shooting and bought a Slave Soleniod since these go bad on a regular basis i was reading and still didn't fix the problem. I was told it was the Solenoid on the Starter does this sound about right? any help would be great!!!

Re: Starter Issue?

Well, throwing parts at it isn't a very effective way of doing things.

The first thing to do is check ALL of the wire connections, and make sure they're clean and tight.

After that, you should TEST the starter solenoid, and see if that's the issue.

When the ignition is turned to the "START" position, you should see voltage at the wire on the "S" terminal on the starter. If you get voltage there, move on to the little copper leg that goes from the solenoid, into the starter. Put a volt meter between that copper leg, and a ground, with the meter set to "volts".

You can also use a test light to check for voltage...

If you get power to the S terminal, but not to the copper leg, replace the solenoid.

If you have 12 volts and clean, tight connections then I would go to the starter solenoid. I thought I had the same problem and replaced mine but it turned out to be a split crankshaft. You might want to read through me thread on page 1 of this forum entitled Starter issue or seized engine??? There's a lot of starter troubleshooting in there. I'm sure more of the experts will chime in here on your post too.

I checked all the connections and everything is spotless and tight. I put a push button to bypass the slave soleniod to the stater and it would spin but wouldn't engage the flywheel. the clicking sound was coming from the Slave...I will check a couple of other things and post again...

Re: Starter Issue?

I edited my testing instructions, so they would make more sense.

When you say you bypassed the slave solenoid, where did you jump the connection to? If you bypassed the starter solenoid as well, then naturally the starter wouldn't engage, since it uses the solenoid to push the bendix out into the flywheel.
