Starter issue?

I ordered a new starter for my 1995 Force 70HP (made by mercury).

It's an ARCO 5397, and it looks like this:

The OEM original part, as listed on iBoats, is this:

The chart that says these are interchangeable is right here on iBoats.

Are these starters indeed interchangeable? This ARCO starter does not appear to be the same and it doesn't seem to want to line up with the bracket my original starter was on. Is this an error on the site, or will this starter fit with some sort of modification?

Re: Starter issue?

You can't always go by the pictures on the WEB pages. It's pretty common for the pictures to be generic and not representative of the actual part. Some WEB sites even make a statement to that effect.

Having said that, the two starters pictured are not interchangeable. The ACRO starter has horizontal bolts, the OEM starter has vertical studs with nuts that attach it to the block.

Re: Starter issue?

Well since the chart states a 1995 70HP Force outboard takes an ARCO 5397, and MY starter looks like the second one, is it safe to assume that I in fact did not get a 5397? Either I received the wrong starter, or the chart lists an incorrect starter. I just want to find out so that the next starter is definitely the right one.

Re: Starter issue?

Rick,

Some applications use a different mount but the starter is the same. Usually the part numbers are different. The positive stud is on the side vs some that are on the bottom but if you had onewith the bracket, you can take it off and use the starter.

John
