Starter Issues??

I just had my 95' 150hp black max die on the boat ramp. It started to turn over for a second then just stopped. Tried a new battery but that wasn't the problem. I took the hood off and tried to bridge the solenoid but that didn't do anything. My buddy tried tapping the starter with a wrench while I tried to start the motor, it would free up sometimes and just spin for a couple seconds without lifting up to start the motor. Then other times the starter would lift up and engage but just would turn the motor. The starter spindle does have a lot of play in it so it might need replace, but I want to make sure before I go spending the money. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the shaft has play in it side to side, then yes, the starter probably needs replaced.
When those bushings wear out like that, it allows the armature to rub the fields on the housing.

There are probably two sets of brushes (pairs). Two of them ground to the base. The screws grounding them like to loosen and/or corrode. The other two attach to the stud that holds the cable from the solenoid. Sometimes that connection breaks. But the grounding screws are far more likely to be the problem.

The motor has really thrown a fit the last couple of weeks when trying to start, just really slow crankin up. Was this probably a sign of the starter going out?

chek your battery cables. remove from both ends, battery and engine. look for nicks, cracks, cuts. they tend to deteriorate from the inside out. only leaving a few strands to carry the electricty, which is not enough to turn the starter. clean connections and must be tight. also the cable from solenoid to starter. this may save you the cost of a starter.
