My 74 Aristocraft with 165hp I6 had to have a new starter key. I wired after market switch to the wires per the schematic. It starts but the starter does not disengage. I have tried rotating the wires at th switch but same issue. Is this because I am using the wrong type of switch? I did not have this problem with old switch but it deteriorated.

Re: Starter key problems

Your wiring may be different on your PRE BIA wiring, and be careful with the color codes in the Merc OEM manuals. Some of them (read most of them) actually have the B and I terminals backwards.
B is for battery
I for ignition
S for start - cranks the starter
A for accessory

Thanks guys-always you are the best. Didn't know the pre-BIA stuff. I found an earlier diagram online and in the morning I will be back to work on the boat.

Re: Starter key problems

Sorry about that, I forgot to put the Pre BIA colors on my list. so here they are.

B is for battery = red wire with white stripe usually 8 or 10 gauge.
I for ignition = white goes to coil + terminal through a resistor wire.
S for start - cranks the starter = yellow to starter solenoid, usually 16 ga.
A for accessory = not used.
