Starter Key to Electric Choke--Is it a short? '73 65hp Johnson

Hi Everyone, thanks for letting me join the conversation! I pulled the bottom carb on this motor, got it put back on a couple days later and now the electric choke is acting up. It worked fine before. There's a toggle beneath the key to activate the choke. Problem: When I turn the key to accessory to get juice for the choke--and only turn the key--the choke activates partially toward closing. When I use the toggle, the choke activates completely to fully closed. Release the toggle and reverts to partially closed. I don't feel any stickiness in the choke toggle. Is it a short? Bad toggle? Bad key switch? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

That is exactly how it is supposed to work. The partially closed position is a warm-up choke to keep it from stalling after a cold start-up.. That will deactivate when the motor is warmed up.

The solenoid should be OK. I cleaned it a while ago because it was sticking occasionally. But it was working fine up until the carb r/r. Thanks

F/R, That's a revelation to me! It wasn't doing that before, (new owner) so I thought it shouldn't active from the key--just the choke toggle. I have a shop manual, too. It didn't mention it. Thanks!

Agreed that is how it left the factory.----Choke comes on partially when you turn key on.----Goes on all the way with choke switch.-----Choke stays on partially till motor warms up.---Then partial choke goes off.

I was just going to ask, what is the mechanism that opens the butterflies after warmup? Is it the older styled bi-metal coil or something different?

There is a temperature switch near the bottom of the cylinder head for this system.------Problem is that some folks might leave a thermostat out of the motor.----Some folks are offended by the smoke on warmup.----Or many folks today do not know how stuff works.-----That has been solved by fuel injection and computers that do adjust for all engine parameters.
