Starter Motor Problems - AQ260 / Chev 350 SB

I have a 1982 NZ built boat which originally had a Volvo Penta AQ260 power pack with 280 leg. I replaced the AQ260 with a (new) Chev 350 SB about 3 years ago, after the old engine gave up the fight against the ocean. However, most of the ancillary equipment is original AQ260 gear, including the starter motor.

I now have a starter motor problem. When I try to start, I just get a single click (relatively quiet click) ... and nothing else. I assumed this would be a flat battery - so I recharged both batts and now even with emergency parallel on two batts - I still get the single click.

I have tried to manually rotate the flywheel with a screwdriver - it moves readily enough ... but still just a single click from the starter (that click may well just be the circuit pulling down the instrument panel - it is a bit hard to tell ... anyway a quiet click)

Anyone got any idea the most likely cause of the problem - that sucker looks a little difficult to remove completely, but maybe that is what is needed - I suspect I would need to remove the starboard exhaust manifold first so I can get hands and tools into the problem. I

If I do need to remove the whole unit - are there any things I should know before I make a start ...
