have a 5.0 mercruiser engine. after replacing the helm Teleflex rack and pinion (I broke it trying to turn the wheel with the engine off) U joint bellows and rebuilding the carburetor now I find that when I turn the key to start the engine nothing happens, all my gauges work so there is power to the helm. I placed a tester on the starter motor red cable and there is power back there I took an old extension cord cable and I went from positive battery to that ignition cable behind the starter motor on top of the red cable and I just got a spark if I touch that little bolt with the positive should I get a reaction from the starter motor. I'm good with tool but bad with electrical issue. any help is appreciated

This makes my head hurt

I think there are questions in here about, Teleflex steering, engine won't start, no gauges and using an extension code for a battery cable. I would appreciate a clarification of the question or questions your asking.

The adults only has a section on how to troubleshoot your starting system

Two easy things you can do to figure out what the problem is. First you can actually jumper from the positive terminal on the battery to the starter. If that spins up the engine, then the starter is good. If not, you have either a bad starter OR a bad ground wire from the battery to the engine. Second, you can also jumper from the red battery wire at the starter solenoid to the small terminal on the starter solenoid to see if the solenoid pulls in and the starter spins. If it doesn't you have again either a bad starter solenoid OR a bad ground. If it does spin the starter, you have a wiring issue between the key switch and the solenoid... JMHO!
